The Chairperson of the National Commission of Women,  Ms. Girija Vyas lauded the efforts of  electronic news media  towards self –regulation as she strongly felt that self-regulation was the only way to make media more purposeful.

With a view to interacting with leaders of various institutions, the Broadcast Editors’ Association (BEA) and News Broadcasters Association (NBA) jointly held a discussion with the National Commission for Women (NCW) on Wednesday, at the behest of the latter.

Ms. Vyas  appreciated  the  role  of the two bodies  and suggested that media should also educate the masses about the laws so that the victims could seek legal recourse. The two broadcast media organizations readily agreed to  this suggestion.

NBA and BEA also welcomed another suggestion from the Chairperson that a joint interaction with other statutory bodies like the National Human Rights Commssion (NHRC) and the Law Commission should be held in near future  for a better understanding of emerging social issues.

The Chairperson also drew the attention of the editors towards use of phrase “honor killing” which is in the vogue. Her contention was that, inadvertently though, the use of this phrase glorified the killers.

NBA  Secretary General  Annie Joseph  and BEA  President Shazi Zaman assured the NCW chief that media would remain alive to the cause of women. BEA General Secretary N K Singh said ,  as the question of killings of women marrying out of their caste or  gotra was more a product of parochial thinking, a right social messaging hand in hand with stringent laws will work as an effective deterrent.
BEA executive members and editors  who spoke on the occasion were Milind Khandekar, Satish K Singh, Deepak Chaurasia, Vinod Kapri, Prabal Pratap Singh, Sanjay Bragta and Vasindra Mishra.
